Charles Mercer Obituary

Charles E. Mercer, 66, retired captain of the London fire department died Wednesday at his home, 8 S. Union St. Although in failing health for some time, he had not been considered critically ill up to the time of his death.

He was born in Pickaway County February 15, 1895, the son of Ernest and Joesphine Harness Mercer. He had been a resident of London for many years.

Mr. Mercer became associated with the London Fire Department in 1928. His total service lasted for 29 years; serving as captain for 20 years until his retirement in January, 1959. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Josephine Houk of Derby; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Delay of Derby, Mrs. Ercel Tracy of Galloway and Mrs. Lillian Jones of Mt. Sterling; two stepsons, Robert Whiteside of Dayton and Ralph Whiteside of Toledo.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Schlechty-Fichner Funeral Home, with burial in Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Sterling.
